What is Deep Water Soloing?
Deep Water Soloing (DWS) is a form of extreme sport climbing done above water without the use of ropes or harnesses. Climbers scale artificial rock walls, and if they fall—no worries—they plunge straight into the refreshing lake below. It’s an exhilarating combination of sport, skill, and splash.
A Summer Highlight at Uiam Lake
Hosted by the Chuncheon Leisure & Taekwondo Committee, the event takes place at the specially designed venue in Songam Sports Town, set against the scenic backdrop of Uiam Lake. From July 12 to July 20, the event invites climbers of all levels to experience the thrill. Weekdays (Tuesday through Thursday) are reserved for beginner-friendly academies, while weekends transform into a festival atmosphere, featuring climbers from across the country.
More Than Just Climbing
Alongside the DWS event, Chuncheon has opened the "Uiam Lake Beach", where visitors can take part in water safety and survival swimming education programs. On Saturdays (July 12 and 19), citizens of all ages can participate in hands-on survival training made especially relevant for families in a post-Sewol Ferry era, with a focus on practical lake-based swimming survival skills.
Cool Down at the Summer Festival Pool
As if that’s not enough reason to visit, an outdoor pool as part of the Summer Festival is also open until August 3, right next to the climbing zone. It's the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun after a session on the wall.
A City of Sports and Culture
The DWS event coincides with the 2025 World Taekwondo Culture Festival and the 2025 Chuncheon Korea Open International Taekwondo Championships, making it a golden opportunity for spectators to enjoy both intense athleticism and rich Korean cultural experiences.
Chuncheon's summer is more than just hot weather—it's a season of sweat, splash, and spectacle. Whether you're a seasoned climber or just looking for your next adventure, put Deep Water Soloing in Chuncheon on your bucket list this July!
